Introduction
AskWanderers is an international travel Q&A community where members ask questions, answer other travelers, share guides, publish experiences, maintain profiles and report content for moderation. We collect and use information only as needed to operate, secure and improve those community features.
Information we collect
Account information. When you register or log in, we store information such as username, display name, email address, password hash, role, account status and login timestamps.
Profile information. Your profile may include a bio, avatar, reputation, role label, privacy choices and travel map visibility settings.
Content users create. We store questions, answers, guide content, travel experiences, comments, votes, reports and moderation history so the community can function.
Uploaded images. Avatars and experience photos may be stored when you upload them. Avoid uploading documents, tickets, booking references or photos that expose private information.
Travel map information. If you use the travel map, we store countries you mark as visited and whether that map should be shown publicly.
Technical and security logs. We may record login attempts, password reset requests, rate limits, reports, moderation actions, developer/admin access events, errors and other security events. Where implemented, IP addresses and user agents may be hashed or redacted.
Cookie preferences. We store cookie consent choices so optional cookie categories can be respected.
How we use information
We use information to provide accounts, publish community content, show profile pages according to privacy settings, process reports, moderate abuse, protect against spam, investigate security issues, maintain site reliability and improve AskWanderers.
User-generated content visibility
Questions, answers, public travel experiences, display names, avatars, reputation and public profile details may be visible to visitors and search engines unless privacy or moderation settings restrict visibility. Do not post personal data you do not want other people to see.
Uploaded photos and metadata
AskWanderers may strip image metadata and GPS data from uploads where the server supports it. This helps reduce accidental location or device-data exposure, but it should not be treated as a guarantee. Review photos before uploading them.
Cookies and consent
Necessary cookies keep login, sessions, CSRF protection and security features working. Optional preference, analytics or marketing cookies are controlled through the cookie banner and cookie settings modal where available.
Data retention
We keep account, content, moderation and security information for as long as needed to operate the community, protect the service, comply with reasonable recordkeeping needs and support user-requested exports or deletion workflows. Some logs may have shorter retention periods configured by the developer dashboard.
Account deletion and data export
Where enabled, members can request a data export or account deletion from Edit Profile. Deletion may use a grace period before account data is anonymized or removed. Public content may be anonymized rather than deleted when needed to preserve community discussions.
Security measures
Passwords are stored as password hashes, reset links use temporary one-time tokens, CSRF tokens protect POST forms, rate limits reduce abuse and security events are logged for review. No security system is perfect, but these measures are designed to reduce practical risk.
Who can access moderation and admin data
Moderators, admins and developers may access reports, moderation history, account status and diagnostic information when needed for community safety, technical maintenance, security investigation or support. Access is role-based and should be limited to people who need it.
International users
AskWanderers is available to international travelers. Your information may be processed on servers or services that are not located in your country. Use of the site means you understand that community and technical data may cross borders as part of operating the service.
Changes to this policy
We may update this page as AskWanderers grows. Continued use of the site means the latest version applies.
